Quotemarks"James Carville once said that the goal in choosing a running mate is to make the opposing campaign manager want to vomit. I ...suspect that Obama's campaign manager is kneeling in front of a toilet right about now...."

Cindy raises an interesting point in her comment. A related issue is when and how do foundation leaders use their public voice in the electoral season. Last week, on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times, William Safire wrote a clearly pro-McCain column. He was identified as both as a past contributor to the page and president of the Dana Foundation. Frankly, I was surprised about the mention of his Foundation affiliation. He did not make the case for support of McCain on the basis of the foundation's expertise. Certainly, foundation leaders should be able to express their opinions on the presidential election as private citizens. However, when they invoke their foundation's name, I would suggest that they ground their remarks in their foundation's values, mission, and fields of work.
